Quick Netflix Review #4: Silent Hill
Overall Grade: B-
Positives: The production design and special effects are outstanding. Silent Hill was definitely believable as a ghost town you would want to get out of and fast. Also, the monsters were genuinely disturbing (the fearsome Pyramid Head creature has a cult following from the game, but it was the nurse monsters that really creeped me out).
Negatives: Some of the dialogue was unintentionally funny (Roger Ebert notes a classic example of this in his review). Also, it features yet another creepy little dark haired girl slinking around (as if I haven't seen such a character in every Asian horror film made). Finally, the ending: I think I understood it better the second time around, but it is still more confusing than haunting.
Would I see it again? Yes. This movie was savaged by critics, but I can't help but feel it's underrated as a horror film. It definitely has flaws, but I felt there were some genuinely scary moments in it (especially the first appearance of the monsters and those creepy nurses).
